Missionary Disciples Service and Discernment Weekend
A missionary journey is never easy. So it was that heavy rains made the trek to our “Missionary Disciples Service and Discernment Weekend” a challenge for the four indomitable young women who showed up on the afternoon of October 20 with raindrops running down their faces but the radiance of the Lord’s own sunshine gleaming in their hearts.
Sharing prayer, reflection, and Eucharistic Adoration with our Little Sisters during the weekend, the participants also engaged in missionary projects with our Residents. But while working with them to make sandwiches for our friends in the street, alas! they ran out of bread, and the kitchen had no more. It was just at that moment that a lady came to the door with 10 loaves of fresh bread to donate, saying “I heard you need some bread.” She was responding to our begging Little Sisters’ search for a new bread supplier, but Divine Providence had timed her response perfectly for our moment of need. Blessed be God!
The young women also assisted our Residents in assembling “Boxes of Joy” (boxes of small Christmas gifts) for needy children in mission lands on the eve of World Mission Sunday. Then that next morning – after they made waffles for the Residents in the dining rooms – our weekend’s concluding Mass saw the blessing of the finished boxes and finally, at the time of sending forth, a commissioning ceremony for our young missionary disciples. Each of the participants received a small cross before reembarking on the missionary journey of daily life with an ever more intentional and loving discernment of the vocation through which Our Lord is calling each of them to be His missionary disciples.
