Reaching Out on World Day of the Poor
Seeking to live “World Day of the Poor” in a meaningful way, our Residents offered special prayers for the needy on November 19, and a small delegation of them went to serve a hot meal at the local soup kitchen.
Most of our Resident delegation arriving on walkers, all were welcomed graciously by the regular soup kitchen volunteers and assigned their serving positions – the ladies behind the hot table and Richard at the beverages.
Dot immediately gravitated toward the children, who were the first guests to arrive, and delighted them with her charm until the serving began. As the other guests began coming through the line, our residents served each of them with great attentiveness and cheerfulness. Connie later commented that respect for the uniqueness of each one – servers and guests alike – transformed the ordinarily into “radiance” during that special time.
Upon arriving back home, our Residents were exuberant in recounting this experience which had touched them so deeply. “Today’s visit to Enfield Loaves and Fishes, and being with people who truly know poverty, touched my heart and soul,” wrote Dot. “I wanted to help them, to tell them how much Jesus loves them, and to do anything in my power to brighten their day.” And Bernadette’s comment summarizes well the feelings of the whole group, “It was a joy to do this. God has been so good to me.”
