Are you a high school or college student looking for a way to make a difference in the world, for some place to volunteer your time and talents?
Are you a youth minister looking for a worthwhile service site for your group? You’ve come to the right place!
Young people bring a great deal of joy to the elderly. The two generations seem to understand each other very well. Our home is blessed with many young volunteers who come from local High Schools and Colleges, sometimes as part of their education work. Lots of times, they develop bonds with the residents and want to keep coming after their course work. It’s even been known for them to bring their Prom dates to the Home before they began their evening of celebration.
Youth service options at Saints Joseph’s Residence include:
- Mass with the Residents and Little Sisters – every day at 11:00 am
- Helping to serve the noon meal to the Residents
- Helping to animate activities with the Residents
- Providing music and entertainment – our Residents always enjoy performances by school groups!
- School class or youth group could sponsor an event – a bingo party or another special activity
- Hospitality Club*
If you or your youth group would like to get to know the wisdom and understanding of our elderly Residents, contact Sr. Patrice at enLSP@littlesistersofthepoor.org
“I have been volunteering at the Residence now for about a month. Not only do I feel needed, I was also welcomed by everyone here since day one. Walking down the halls you will always see a smiling face. Everyone is so nice and I meet new people every day. The Residents love when I visit and are always making jokes about living in a “crazy” house. I enjoy coming to volunteer because to me it feels like a second home. I love to help people and Sister always finds ways to put me to work. Since I want to be a nurse, volunteering at the Residence lets me see what it would be like and gives me extra experience before going to college. It has been so much fun volunteering and if I could, I would volunteer every day of the week.” Rebecca Schlask, Volunteer
“I love volunteering at St. Joseph’s Residence. When I first started volunteering at St. Joe’s, everyone was so welcoming. The first day I volunteered, I was able to play Bingo with some of the Residents. The Residents are so nice and appreciative of everything you do for them. Everyone at St. Joe’s makes it enjoyable for me to volunteer. The Sisters and the Residents are always full of laughter and smiles. I feel so lucky to be able to volunteer at St. Joe’s, knowing that I am able to make a difference in my community. I really enjoy volunteering at St. Joe’s and it is a wonderful experience for me.” Nicole Schlask, Volunteer
*The Hospitality Club gathers each month for a full day of sharing, praying and fun with the Residents. In the recent past, we had a talent show, bake sale, and casino games.
